Buying an Optimist: a guide for families and clubs
Rules, construction, accessories and school vs racing before you buy.
In short: To race, an Optimist must comply with IODA rules; the Lenam Optimist does, with an exact 35 kg minimum weight and approved buoyancy bags. As well as the hull you will need a sail, mast, centreboard and rudder, launching trolley and covers, for school or racing use.

The Optimist is the boat in which many children learn to sail and start racing. If you are buying one, for your child or for your club's fleet, these are the key points we look at, as we build it in our own workshop.
The rules: IODA and minimum weight
To race, an Optimist must comply with the rules of the international class (IODA). The Lenam Optimist is built to those rules, with an exact 35 kg minimum weight and approved maximum-capacity buoyancy bags with an extra inflation tube.
What makes a better Optimist?
Waterlines and design are practically the same at every builder, so the difference lies in the details:
- Tough materials so the hull is as stiff as the rules allow.
- Perfect alignment of the rudder fittings, centreboard case, mast step and mast thwart.
- The right centre of gravity and the exact minimum weight.
- Padded toe straps, a good centreboard retaining system and the best fittings.

The accessories you'll need
As well as the hull, an Optimist needs its kit. At Lenam we can supply everything:
- Masts and sails from all brands, for top-level racing and for schools.
- Approved centreboard and rudder, for racing and for schools.
- Take-apart launching trolley, paddle and bailer.
- Covers: padded hull cover, deck cover, foil covers and mast covers.
School or racing?
The hull can be the same; what changes is the kit. For a school, toughness and the price of the package come first; for racing, it's racing sails, masts and foils. Tell us how it will be used and we will suggest the right kit.
Other boats to start with
If the child is still young or just wants to have fun, you can also look at the Europi, which uses the same sail as the Optimist, or the Taz. And when they grow, the next step is usually the 420 or the ILCA.
